Three-time junior world champion Masako Furuichi claimed a gold medal for Japan as women’s freestyle events took centre stage at the United World Wrestling (UWW) Golden Grand Prix Final in Baku.

The 20-year-old Japanese wrestler defeated 2013 world champion Alina Makhinya of Ukraine en route to the women’s 69 kilogram final at the Baku Sports Hall.

Furuichi dominated the gold medal bout, triumphing 11-4 against the United States’ Tamyra Mensah.

Russia’s Anastasia Bratchikova haded Makhinya her second defeat of the day, winning their bronze medal match 5-0.

Kazakhstan’s Elmira Syzdykova disappointed the host nation by overcoming Azerbaijan’s Elis Manolova 7-3 in the other bronze medal bout

Furuichi’s triumph earned Japan their second gold medal of the day, with Momoka Kadoya having topped the podium in the 53kg event after China’s Qianyu Pang withdrew through injury.

Azerbaijan’s Anzhela Dorogan earned a victory by fall over Canada’s Samantha Stewart to take a bronze medal, with Russia’s Natalia Malysheva securing the final podium place by defeating Germany’s Nina Hemmer 5-0.

China and Ukraine also matched Japan’s tally of two gold medals in women’s events, with eight divisions contested in total.

Rio 2016 bronze medallist Yanan Sun gave China their first success, winning 6-0 against Japan’s Miho Igarashi in the 48kg final.

America's Victoria Anthony earned a technical fall verdict against Romania’s Emilia Vuc in the first bronze medal bout and Russia’s Valeriya Chepsarakova overcame Kazakhstan’s Irina Borissova 8-4 in the second.

China were assured of gold in the 75kg event after their two wrestlers reached the final, with Qiandegenchagan Qiandegenchagan triumphing 3-1 against Fengliu Zhang.

Russia’s Alena Perepelkina and Kazakhstan’s Irina Kazyulina secured technical fall and fall victories over Colombia’s Andrea Olaya Gutierrez and Russia’s Anzhela Kataeva in their bronze medal bouts.

Oksana Herhel secured a gold medal for Ukraine in the 60kg division, overcoming Azerbaijan’s Tetiana Omelchenko by a fall.

China’s Yingyan Han was awarded the first bronze medal after Ukraine’s Madina Bakbergenova was forced to withdraw through injury, while a technical fall verdict saw Japan’s Ayaka Ito defeat Tunisia’s Lilia Mejri.

The second Ukrainian gold was claimed by Yuliia Ostapchuk, who was awarded a victory by fall over China’s Rui Xu in the 63kg competition.

Hungary’s Marianna Sastin reached the podium following a technical fall win over North Korea’s Jongsim Rim before Japan’s Ayana Gempei beat Azerbaijan’s Elmira Gambarova 4-1.

A first African gold of the three-day event was earned by Odunayo Adekuoroye, the Nigerian securing a technical fall win over Russia’s Nina Menkenova in the 55kg event.

Ukraine’s Tetyana Kit won a bronze medal in the same manner against Kazakhstan’s Aiym Abdildina, while a fall verdict was enough for Azerbaijan’s Alyona Kolesnik to beat her team-mate Shabnam Ahmadova for the other podium place.

The final women’s gold medal of the day was won by Grace Bullen, the Norwegian earning a victory by fall against Yaquelin Estornell Elizastigue in the 58kg division.

China’s Zhangting Zhou beat Tunisia’s Rim Ayari with a technical fall to earn a bronze medal and Russia’s Veronika Chumikova also secured a podium spot after a 7-2 win against Japan’s Chiho Hamada.

The prestigious three-day competition is due to conclude tomorrow with the Greco-Roman events, featuring the top four wrestlers in the world rankings being joined by the four best wrestlers from the Americas, Asia and Europe.
