Joël Bouzou, President and founder of Peace and Sport,, officially brought the ninth edition of the Forum to a close here this afternoon after declaring "sport does work in creating peace".

Those in attendance at the Forum this week, which began on Wednesday (November 23), explored topics surrounding the title of "how sport can help to foster sustainable peace" as part of efforts "for a better, fairer and more united world".

"Thank you all for your participation and commitment this week," Bouzou said in his closing speech.

"On Wednesday I spoke about the peace movement from all corners of society and the need to accelerate this.

"I have been struck at this Forum at how many projects there are from International Federations, our Peace and Sport Champions and Non-Government Organisations in the most diverse and remote areas of the globe.

"Throughout these three days you have given us very convincing arguments that sport does work in creating peace."

Prior to officially declaring the Forum closed, Bouzou also asked those in attendance to spare a thought for Chinese sailor Chuan Guo.

Chuan went missing more than a month ago during an attempt to break the world record for a solo crossing of the Pacific.

The United States Coast Guard boarded his drifting yacht and found his lifejacket but he was not there, they said.

As a tribute to the work Chuan did for Peace and Sport during his life, Bouzou also revealed that next year there would be an award given in his honour, the winner of which will be chosen by the Champions for Peace club.

In his concluding statement, Bouzou also began to look forward to next year's Peace and Sport Forum, marking the 10 year anniversary of the organisation.

"Next year we celebrate ten years of Peace and Sport and the Forum will be held between December 6-8 2017 here in Monaco," said Bouzou.

"This will be an opportunity to measure how far we have come and I hope you have been inspired to make further progress before then."
