Defending men’s champions Sweden recorded two victories to move into a three-way tie for the lead at the top of the standings at the European Curling Championships in Braehead in Scotland.

The Olympic bronze medallists, skipped by ever-present leader Niklas Edin, comfortably overcame Finland 8-3 in the morning session.

A successful day for the Swedes was complete when they edged a determined Italian side 6-4 in the evening.

"It’s been really amazing so far," Sweden’s second Rasmus Wrana said.

"We’ve had fantastic ice, a great atmosphere within the team and it just feels really great out there.

"Being the new one on the team, I’m enjoying the experience and it’s been really fun to play."

Switzerland looked on course to make it five wins from five when they thrashed Germany 7-2 but a 6-5 reverse at the hands of hosts Scotland denied them the chance to break free from the chasing pack.

The contest against the home nation proved to be a nail-biter, with three blank ends ratcheting up the tension.

With the scores locked at 5-5, Scotland stole a point in the final end to claim their third victory of the tournament.

The Scottish rink had earlier fallen to their first-ever defeat to Austria, who earned a shock 7-6 success.

Norway followed their Scandinavian counterparts in picking up two victories as they beat Russia 7-5, which came before they enjoyed a 9-1 triumph over Austria.

In the women's competition, hosts Scotland continued their superb start to the event on home ice as they remain the only team to have won all five matches.

They began with an 11-4 rout of Finland but they knew the real test would come in the evening as they clashed with world champions Switzerland.

The encounter was as nervy as many would have expected as the two sides traded blows before Scotland struck decisively in the 10th end to clinch a 4-3 triumph.

The Czech Republic also emerged victorious from their two contests today, ousting defending champions Russia 6-5 and Denmark 7-6.

Russia, who have struggled for form thus far, bounced back from the defeat to the Czechs by comfortably beating Finland 8-3.

The event in Scotland is due to continue tomorrow.
