Chinese Taipei, China, Turkey and Iran all struck gold on the third day of the 2016 World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) World Taekwondo Junior Championships at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre in Burnaby in Canada.

Medals were up for grabs today in the women's under-52 kilogram, men's under-59kg, women's under-55kg and men's under-63kg categories.

In the opening final of the day, Chai Ling Lo of Chinese Taipei defeated Russian Ekaterina Kvartalnaia in the women's under-52kg division.

Following a nervy and scoreless opening round, Lo landed the first blow with a kick to the body, going one up before doubling her lead shortly after.

In the third round, the Russian finally scored, cutting Lo's advantage to 2-1.

With 23 seconds remaining, Lo landed a kick to Kvartalnaia's face which dropped her to the mat.

A video replay was called for and accepted, putting Lo 5-1 up, the final score of the bout.

The bronze medals were won by both Ikra Kayir of Turkey and Laetitita Aoun of Lebanon.

The final of the men's under-59kg followed and pitted together Hakan Recber of Turkey and Morocco's Omar Lakehal.

Lakehal raced into a three point lead with a spinning heel kick to the head, before Recber instantly struck back with a punch to the body for one point, before he scored with his own head kick.

The Moroccan then caught his opponent with a spinning back kick that floored Recber on the edge of the mat, to give Lakehal a 6-4 advantage after round one.

The second ended with Lakehal maintaining a narrow 7-6 lead after both athletes traded minor blows.

In the third and final round, Recber landed a sublime jump spinning heel kick - one of taekwondo’s most technically difficult moves and one that is more common in demonstrations than in actual fights - to Lakehal’s face, taking his score to 10.

The Moroccan returned fire with a punch, taking the scoreboard to 10-9.

Both competitors continued to search for points and it was Recber who extended his lead to 14-9 after landing a round kick to the head.

The Turkish competitor then added two more points after his opponent, trying a jumping ax kick, crashed to the ground.

Following a manic end to the round the bout ended 18-12 to Recber, who seized gold after a brilliant performance, leaving the Moroccan with the silver.

The bronze medals were shared by Woo-jin Choi of South Korea and David Nazaryan of Russia.

In the penultimate final today, the women's under-55kg event, the impressive Lijun Zhou of China took on Kristina Beros of Croatia.

Zhou struck first with a lightning fast round kick to the head, securing her three points.

Beros struck back with a body shot to finish the round with the score at 3-1 to Zhou.

In the second, Beros levelled the contest at 3-3 before Zhou connected to the Croatian’s head again, going 6-3 up.

In the third, Beros flew into attack to score with a head kick, before Zhou recovered to reply with another ax kick as both athletes landed head kick after head kick, taking the score to 13-10 to the Chinese athlete.

With 30 seconds remaining, it was Zhou who was more accurate and she claimed the gold medal with an 18-13 win.

Natalia Nikliborc of Poland and Mobina Babalou of Iran won the bronze medals.

Bringing today's action to a close was the gold medal match in the men's under-63kg class where Russian Nikita Pushanko competed against Amir Mohammad Bakhshi of Iran.

From the start, Bakhshi looked stronger, though the Russian had a slight height advantage.

Following a scoreless opening round, the second continued in much the same way, with both cancelling out each other’s kicks.

Finally, Bakhshi scored a point as the Russian went over the perimeter, and he then added a second with a cut kick to the torso to give him a 2-0 advantage.

In the third, it was yet again the Iranian who pressed forward and he added a third point while the frustrated Pushanko was unable to find space to produce any sort of score.

By the last 30 seconds, Pushanko was looking tired and the contest ended 4-0 to Bakhshi, with Pushanko taking silver.

The bronze medals went to Joshua Liu of the United States and Ferhat Can Kavurat of Turkey.

Prior to the finals, the tournament's 83 referees were awarded participation certificates by  WTF President Chungwon Choue.

Action is due to resume on day four, the penultimate day of the Championships, tomorrow.
