Spain's Olympic champion Carolina Marin successfully progressed to the quarter-finals of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) China Open Superseries tournament at the Haixia Olympic Sports Centre in Fuzhou today.

Marin overcame China's Sayako Sato in straight games 21-13, 21-12 to secure her place in the next round. 

She is now due to take on fifth seed Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei after she also got the better of a Japanese opponent.

Tai took 36 minutes to defeat Minatsu Mitani 21-15, 21-19.

Sun Yu overcame Chen Yufei 21-12, 21-18 in an all Chinese affair.

The competition's eighth seed has been drawn to play unseeded Line Kjaersfeld of Denmark in the quarter-finals after she defeated Yip Pui Yin of Hong Kong 21-13, 21-15.

Following the withdrawal of Malaysia's Olympic silver medallist Lee Chong Wei due to a hamstring injury, China's Chen Long, the Rio 2016 gold medallist, is now the favourite to win the men's singles title on home soil.

He asserted his dominance over fellow Chinese player Shi Yuqi, securing his place in the next round courtesy of a 21-16, 21-13 win.

Chen won this tournament in 2010, 2012 and 2013 and is seeking a fourth title this week.

Denmark's Viktor Axelsen, the Olympic bronze medallist at Rio 2016, also advanced after he overcame Hong Kong's Hu Yun in straight games 21-15, 21-18.

In the men's doubles competition the top seeded pair of Chai Biao and Hong Wei, of China, eliminated compatriots Zheng Siwei and Lu Kai 21-14, 21-17.

South Korea's Ko Sung Hyun and partner Kim Ha Na, top seeds in the mixed doubles event, were forced to come from behind as they also won today.

The Thai duo of Nipitphon Phuangphua and Jongkolpha Kititharak took a shock lead after winning the opening game 18-21, however,they could not maintain that momentum as they lost the second and decisive third games 21-15, 21-19.

Competition is due to continue until Sunday (November 20) when there will be a day of finals.
