Ireland’s Grainne Walsh recorded a rare stoppage to clinch victory in her middleweight clash with Marija Petkovic of Serbia on the second day of the European Boxing Confederation (EUBC) European Women’s Boxing Championships at the Sofia Sports Hall in Bulgaria.

Walsh was in commanding form and managed to stop her opponent early in the third round to extend her stay at the competition.

She was the only boxer to seal victory by technical knockout, with all of the other bouts going the distance.

In the other bout in the middleweight division, Turkey’s Sema Galiskan defeated Jovana Vucic of Croatia with a unanimous success.

Russia’s Aleksandra Ordina booked her place in the next round of the welterweight event as all three judges awarded her the win in her contest against Sweden’s Lina Skoghagen.

She was joined by Poland’s Kinga Siwa, who proved far too strong for Iliyana Galabova of Bulgaria, whose exit from the European Championships was met with disappointment from the home crowd.

The Bulgarian supporters did have a victory to cheer on the second day of action in Sofia as Sevda Asenova swept aside Steluta Duta of Romania with a unanimous win in the light-flyweight category.

Lynsay Holdaway, representing Wales, also earned a dominant triumph as she claimed a 3-0 success over Setu Lehtonen of Finland.

Ekaterina Pinigina continued the excellent display from Russian boxers on day two as she beat Ireland’s Lauren Hogan, again by unanimous decision.

Demi-Jade Resztan, a late inclusion into England’s squad for the event after she impressed selectors during recent trials in Sheffield, justified her selection with a confident victory over Volha Lushchyk of Belarus.

Hungary’s Virginia Barankai was another winner in the light-flyweight competition as she cruised past Aziza Abbasova of Azerbaijan.

Action is due to continue in Sofia tomorrow, with another 14 matches scheduled to take place.
