Alex Massie and Michelle Salt are the headline names in Canada’s squad of nine for the upcoming International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Snowboard season, due to get underway with the opening event of the campaign in Landgraaf in The Netherlands tomorrow.

Massie and Salt were both among those named in the IPC Snowboard’s list of "Ones to Watch" for the 2016-2017 season, revealed last week.

They will both be hoping to delight the home crowd during next year’s World Championships at Big White in Canada, the main event of the upcoming season and due to take place from February 1 to 8.

Massie arrives in the Dutch resort having enjoyed a successful 2015-2016, winning two World Cup bronze medals.

She also won a silver medal in the Para-snowboard event at the X Games.

"He’s a really smooth rider," Canadian national team coach and Olympian Mark Fawcett told Post Media.

"He has great hands and great touch.

"That’s what he has on the snowboard.

"It’s exceedingly rare for a bigger guy."

Salt finished ninth at in the 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi and ended last year’s World Cup campaign in third place, providing a boost to her chances of success at the World Championships.

John Leslie, seventh at Sochi 2014, and Andrew Genge are also due to compete in The Netherlands alongside Massie and Salt.

Canada’s team for the season is completed by Gerrit Van Bruggen, Curtis Minard, Daniel Shoemaker, Coulton Liddle and Sandrine Hamel.

A host of world champions are set to take to the snow in Landgraaf, with 80 athletes from 22 countries expected to line up at the traditional curtain-raiser.

Among the leading names at the event at SnowWorld is Dutchwoman Bibian Mentel-Spee, the Paralympic champion in the SB-LL2 snowboard cross discipline.

"I’ve been training this summer with [Finnish snowboarder] Matti Suur-Hamari and [teammate] Merijn Koek and that has been working out very nice so far," Mentel-Spee said.

"Together with the coaches Mikko Wendelin and Edwin Spee, we have a great team where we work very hard but also have a lot of fun."
