The IWAS revealed plans to stage a World Games for women following a meeting of its Executive Board in Pisa in Italy.

The governing body has launched a call for nations to submit a bid for the event, where competition will be held in the under-23 and open categories.

A host city is set to be revealed to the membership of the IWAS "in the coming months".

It will be held in the same year as the IWAS Under-23 World Games, with a host for the event yet to be confirmed.

"Promoting the opportunities available to the sportswomen of the IWAS member nations is one of the key focuses of the International Wheelchair & Amputee Sports Federation going forward," IWAS chief executive Charmaine Hooper said.

"We feel the first edition of the IWAS Women's World Games will aide significantly in the development of sport for women with physical impairments around the world and attract new women and girls into both recreational and competitive sport."

The announcement comes after the IWAS announced sweeping changes to the World Games programme in August last year.

The organisation revealed the World Games would be split into under-18, under-23, open and masters categories from 2017.

It is hoped the revamped structure of their Games programme will help countries field athletes in suitable categories and will, therefore, go some way in reducing financial costs for each country.

Entering the open category, while also getting the opportunity to observe competitors in the masters category for those who are 40-years of age or older, will aid the development of the younger athletes at the Games, IWAS believe.

Sochi, host of the 2014 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games, staged the 2015 World Games, while the Under-23 World Games took place in Prague earlier this year.
