Italian wheelchair fencer Emanuele Lambertini has been named winner of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Allianz Athlete of the Month award for October.

The 17-year-old enjoyed huge success at the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation under-17 and under-23 Wheelchair Fencing World Championships in Stadskanaal in The Netherlands. 

His achieved a four medal haul, including two golds, having won the under-17 mixed foil and mixed epee titles.

Lambertini had also shown his ability at the Paralympic Games after he marked his debut in Rio de Janeiro by reaching the quarter-finals in the men’s foil category A competition.

The Italian received a total of 62 per cent of the public vote for the award to emerge as the clear victor.

Britain’s goalball player Laura Perry was second with 31 per cent after she scored 31 points to lead her country to gold at the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Goalball European Championship Group B.

Britain were the undisputed winners of the competition after going undefeated, sealing promotion to Group A in the process.

Helena Kasicka and Peter Vidasic, the Slovakian wheelchair dance sport athletes, finished third in the vote with five per cent.

The duo won Latin combi class one gold at the 2016 IPC Wheelchair Dance Sport European Championships, having been runners-up four times at previous World Championships as well as at the last two European events.

Wheelchair racers Tatyana McFadden of the United States and Switzerland’s Marcel Hug were also nominated for the October award.

Nominations for the award are decided after submissions by National Paralympic Committees and International Federations, before the public votes online.
