Saeed Almaktoum of the United Arab Emirates claimed the gold medal in the men's skeet competition on the final day of the sixth Asian Shotgun Championships at the Al Forsan International Sports Resort in Abu Dhabi today.

Almaktoum defeated Saud Habib of Kuwait 15-13 to secure the gold on home soil after both had shot 16 in the semi-finals.

Habib led the competition overnight by one point on 74 after three rounds of shooting, but was unable to continue his fine form in the final.

Like all the other Kuwaiti shooters at the event, Habib was competing as an independent athlete at the Championships given that their country is currently suspended from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) due to Government interference.

Almaktoum and Habib both progressed to the final after a shoot-off with five athletes, after seven shooters were tied on a score of 119.

India's Mairaj Ahmad Khan asserted his class by winning the bronze medal.

Mairaj was in sublime form in the knockout phase, except when he narrowly missed a single bird in the semi-finals which ultimately cost him a place in the gold medal contest.

"It is the nature of our sport, we have to move on,’’ said Mairaj, who won a World Cup silver medal in Rio de Janeiro earlier this year.

Mairaj also finished in ninth place at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games this summer.

In the bronze medal match, the Indian overwhelmed Naser Aldihani of Kuwait 16-13.

Elsewhere, Kuwait won the men's team skeet event with a score of 362.

Kazakhstan secured the silver medal while India managed to grab the bronze, finishing one point behind their rivals.
