It would prove a straightforward day for the top ranked women’s players, with fourth seed Natsuki Nidaira of Japan thrashing Costa Rica’s Lauren Villalobos 21-5, 21-5.

South Korea’s Ga Eun Kim also eased through, defeating Canada’s Katie Ho-Shue 21-8, 21-9.

The biggest casualty in the men’s draw was the elimination of sixth seed Korakrit Laotrakul of Thailand.

Despite winning the second game of his match against Daniel Nikolov, Laotrakul would ultimately fall to a 21-13, 19-21, 21-19 loss to the Bulgarian.

There were no such problems for Laotrakul’s compatriot Kantaphon Wangcharoe, with the top seed defeating Scotland’s Matthew Grimley 21-5, 21-13.

Second seed Zii Jia Lee of Malaysia was also a comfortable winner, easing past Germany’s Brian Holtschke 21-8, 21-8.
