Tokyo 2020 have launched a nationwide participation programme aimed building public support before the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The initiative is split into two elements, with events set to be part of either the official or the support programme.

Tokyo 2020 revealed they will authorise and brand events that meet specific criteria and leverage these to promote positive social change across the country.

The official programme includes events organised by the Government, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government or a municipal authority within the Tokyo area.

Official sponsors, the International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee, authorised broadcasters and local bodies which own and operate competition venues will also be able to be included under the official programme.

This will also extend to events put on by the Japanese Olympic and Paralympic Committees.

Tokyo 2020 have then revealed the support programme will include authorised Games-related events conducted by non-commercial organisations aiming to engage as many people as possible.

It is hoped the series of public events will help to build support for the Games and maximise their impact and reach across Japan.

Four logos have been created to accompany the programmes, with one dedicated for official Olympic events and another covering Paralympic.

The third logo will be for events covering both the Olympic and Paralympics, while the last will be used for the support programme activities.

It has been claimed the logos will help to promote events which form part of the nationwide participation programme.

Eight categories are included under the programme, including sport and health, urban planning, sustainability, cultural Olympiad and education.

The list is completed by economy and technology, recovery, and nationwide benefits.

Tokyo 2020 state they will evaluate all proposals submitted to them and authorise those that meet its criteria.

Organisers have claimed several events showcasing sport and culture are already planned in the Greater Tokyo Area, as well as affected areas of the Tōhoku region to engage the young generation and invite them to play a part in the preparations for the Games.
