North Korean goalkeeper Jang Paek-ho has been banned from football for a year and fined after he deliberately conceded a goal at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-16 Championship in September.

Jang allowed himself to be beaten by a goal kick from the opposition goalkeeper as North Korea lost 3-1 to Uzbekistan in the group stage of the tournament in India.

Both teams had already secured their places in the quarter-finals but the defeat allowed the Koreans to finish second in the group, meaning they avoided eventual champions Iraq in the next round.

The AFC has also banned the team's manager, Yung Jong-su, for a year.

A statement by the AFC said that the player, his country's Football Association and under-16 head coach had "brought the game into disrepute with the deliberate conceding of a goal".

Yung was fined £4,000 ($5,000/€4,500) while Jang was fined £800 ($1,000/€900).

North Korea's football association was fined £16,000 ($20,000/€18,000).

Jang came to collect the goal kick before appearing to duck underneath Uzbekistan goalkeeper Jasurbek Umrzakov's long ball forward.

As the ball rolled towards the goal, Jang threw himself onto the floor before he could reach it, allowing the opposition to take a 1-0 lead.

Jang then conceded two more goals in the space of six minutes before being substituted.

By losing 3-1, North Korea finished second in their group and went on to beat Oman in the last eight before losing on penalties to Iran in the semi-finals.

Uzbekistan, as group winners, faced Iraq and exited in the last eight 2-0.

The four teams who made the semi-finals all qualified for the Under-17 World Cup, to be held in India from October 6 to 28 next year.

The AFC will allow North Korea to compete at the tournament without both Jang and Yung, but said they would ban the team from the 2018 AFC Under-19 Championship if they "engage in similar behaviour".
