Saskatoon and Winnipeg have launched a joint bid to stage the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Junior Championship in 2019.

The effort came after discussions were held between the Saskatoon Sports Tourism and the True North Sports & Entertainment company, who own National Hockey League team, the Winnipeg Jets.

Competition has been scheduled to take place in the MTS Centre in Winnepeg and Saskatoon’s SaskTel Centre.

Should their bid be selected by Hockey Canada, Saskatoon would stage the tournament for the third time in their history, following events in 1991 and 2010.

Only Helsinki have held the event on three occasions, although Montreal will join them when they hold next year’s event with Toronto.

Winnipeg previously hosted the Championship in 1999.

"We really are absolutely thrilled to be partnering in Saskatoon and then with True North out of Winnipeg for what we think is a terrific tandem for the 2019 Face Off at Centre Ice, as we’re calling it," Saskatoon Blades President Steve Hogle told the Global News.

"The fans that came out and the volunteers that worked the event [in 2010 were] unparalleled.

"We know Winnipeg can bring the same intangibles to the table and we just think it’s a dynamic duo."

It is expected that Hockey Canada will make a decision on the host of the tournament in either November or December.

The forthcoming tournament in Montreal and Toronto is due to begin on December 26 and last until January 5.

The round robin phase is split between both cities, with the host nation taking on Latvia, Russia, Slovakia and the United States in Group B, which will be held in Toronto’s Air Canada Centre.

Defending champions Finland, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland will contest Group A at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

The 2018 tournament will take place in the United States, with a preliminary round game between the hosts and Canada set to be the first IIHF match to be held outdoors.
