The event, a leg of the International Skating Union's (ISU) Grand Prix of Figure Skating season, will be held in the New York village between November 24 and 26 next year at the Herb Brooks Arena.

It will be a key warm-up event for those eyeing medals at Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, due to begin on February 9 in 2018.

Lake Placid has twice hosted the Winter Olympics, in 1932 and 1980.

"US Figure Skating looks forward to returning to Lake Placid for this prestigious international competition," US Figure Skating President Sam Auxier said. 

"The community has a rich history in figure skating and we are excited to celebrate part of the Olympic season in Lake Placid."

Lake Placid hosted the inaugural Skate America competition in 1979 and has staged it three times since then, in 1979, 1982 and 2009.

The event is traditionally the first stop on the prestigious Grand Prix season, with this year's events concluding in Chicago on Sunday (October 30).

Men's, women's, pairs and ice dance events will all be held.

"Over the last several years bringing Skate America back to Lake Placid has been a focus of this organisation," said Pat Barrett, chairman of the Olympic Regional Development Authority which will help run the event with US Figure Skating.

"The Lake Placid community takes extreme pride in its figure skating history and through Skate America, as well as other competitions, it’s our opportunity to showcase it."
