Iran’s Ali Davoudi held off the challenge of Russia’s Dimitrii Gretsa to earn the final gold medal of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Youth World Championships in Penang.

Davoudi made an impressive start to the men’s over 94 kilogram event in Malaysia, as he triumphed in the snatch competition by achieving a successful lift of 170kg.

Having finished second in the snatch, Gretsa tried to close the gap to the leader in the clean and jerk stage of the event, resulting in a best lift of 190kg.

Despite having achieved an overall total of 350kg, it would not prove enough to displace his Iranian rival as Davoudi sealed victory by producing a 205kg clean and jerk to finish the competition on a final total of 375kg to win gold.

There was further cause for celebration for the Iranian team as Mohammadreza Roshani completed the podium in the overall competition, ending with a total of 342kg.

The super-heavyweight gold had come after Georgia’s Irakli Chkheidze had topped the podium in the men’s 94kg earlier in the day.

Chkheidze had been left trailing after Pavel Szmeja of Poland had lifted 155kg in the snatch stage of the competition, but having only achieved one kilogram less the title would come down to the clean and jerk.

A lift of 186kg gave Chkheidze a final total of 340kg, while his rival opted for lower lifts to end the completion on 329kg.

Szmeja would ultimately have to settle for the bronze medal, after an excellent clean and jerk effort saw Azat Serdarov finish the competition on 330kg to give the Turkmenistan competitor the silver.

The final gold of the women’s competition in Penang was won by China’s Song Huibing, after she triumphed in both the over 69kg snatch and the clean and jerk events.

Song would end with a winning total of 259kg, while South Korea’s Lee Seon Mi achieved 253kg to win silver.

After finishing seventh in the snatch, Armenia’s Arpine Dalayan came third in the clean and jerk to propel herself to the bronze medal, ending the competition on 220kg.
