Tove Alexandersson and Matthias Kyburz have won the overall 2016 International Orienteering Federation (IOF) World Cup titles in Aarau, Switzerland.

Alexandersson of Sweden claimed victory on four occasions throughout the season while Switzerland’s Kyburz won five of the 10 events that took place over the course of the campaign.

Their successes in Aarau, combined with a number of second and third positions, helped to secure the overall World Cup titles.

After the 10 events, four of them being sprint races, it was the two runners with previous experience of winning World Cup titles that were once again successful.

Alexandersson has now won the overall women's title for three years in a row with a total score of 660 points.

Finishing in second place, 33 points behind Alexandersson, was Switzerland’s Judith Wyder while Maja Alm of Denmark took third position with 490 points.

Meanwhile in the men’s event, following his victories in 2012 and 2013, Kyburz returned to the top of the podium with 734 points.

Another Swiss athlete, Daniel Hubmann, finished in second with 427 points, losing the title he won last year.

Norwegian Olav Lundanes rounded off the top three as he took third with 380 points.

In addition to the individual World Cups, the overall sprint relay title was also decided in Aarau.

In the final race of the campaign, Denmark could not defend their title, having to settle for second, after they were beaten by a strong Swiss team.

Sweden finished third overall, followed by Russia in fourth and Norway in fifth.
