Beatrice Vio has been chosen to attend the final state dinner hosted by Barack Obama at the White House today as the American President welcomes Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

The wheelchair fencer was selected with Renzi claiming the guest list would include "people representing the best that the country has to offer".

Vio has been a star of Italian Paralympic sport in recent years, culminating in the 19-year-old securing gold in the women’s individual foil category B competition at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.

The Italian saw off the challenge of Zhou Jingjing in the gold medal contest, before winning a closely fought bout with Hong-Kong's Yu Chui Yee to help the country claim team foil bronze.

As well as her Paralympic accomplishments, Vio has earned world and European titles in her fledgling career.

She recorded a sensational streak of 11 consecutive victories in World Cup events before a narrow loss in Warsaw during July.

Vio’s achievements were hailed by Renzi ahead of flying to the United States on a state visit.

"I think that she is an example for the next generations," he said.

"All the difficulties that hit her and wounded her never stopped her.

"I am very happy that she will board the plane with us.

"Let's take the Tricolore to the White House."

Among the other attendees at the state dinner will be Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani, actor Roberto Benigni and Oscar-winning director Paolo Sorrentino.

Singer Gwen Stefani is due to provide entertainment at the dinner, while American chef Mario Batali will prepare the food for the occasion.

Renzi had been a vocal backer of Rome's bid for the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, but the Italian capital's efforts have now been suspended after the city's Mayor Virginia Raggi withdrew her support.

Before that his country were in competition with Obama and the US, which has launched a bid through Los Angeles.

Budapest and Paris are also in contention ahead of the International Olympic Committee electing a host at its Session in Lima on September 13 next year.

Obama will be replaced as US President by either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump in November after serving his maximum of two four-year terms.
