The International Federation of Roller Sports (FIRS) Artistic Roller Skating World Championships got underway today at the Pala Igor Arena in Novara in Italy.

Both of the figure compulsory competitions and the opening round of the inline short programmes took place.

The junior ladies opened the day's competition with the figure compulsory event.

The defending champion, Argentina's Giselle Soler, had to perform to her best in order to retain her gold medal ahead of her rival, Italy's Elena Donadelli.

After both competitors performed, only 0.4 points divided them with Soler managing to claim the gold once more with a total of 229.6 points.

The bronze medal went to another Argentinian athlete, Camilla Valle, who scored 222.6 points.

In the junior men's event the United States' Deven Jackobson followed up his gold medal at last year's event by securing another in Novara with an overall score of 218.5 points.

Germany's European champion Tim Jendricke won the silver medal after he scored 219.7 points, while 216.1 was enough to secure the bronze for Italian Alessio Gangi.

Russia dominated the junior ladies inline short programme, finishing the day in first and third positions in the rankings thanks to impressive performance from Anastasia Nosova and Daria Volkova.

Nosova scored 22.18 points and Volkova takes a total of 20.15 into tomorrow's action.

Second place went to Valentina Escobar from Argentina with 21.05.

Even though the amount of participants attending this event is increasing, there were only four skaters involved in the junior men's category.

Colin Motley of the US dominated the competition with a score of 28.91 points, establishing a big lead over his rivals ahead of day two.

India's Amalraj Abajit finished second with 19.90 points and Ting-Yu Wan of Chinese Taipei took third with a total of 18.33.

Germany's Claudia Pfeiffer and Serena Giraud of France placed, respectively, in second and third with 28.71 and 24.13 pointsahead of the long programme tomorrow.

Chinese Taipei's Yi-Fan Chen confirmed his dominance in the senior men's discipline topping the men's inline standings after the short programme with a score of 32.45 points.

Argentinian Carlos Urquia took second with 28.69, while the race for third was very tight with Chinese Taipei's Chun Lee narrowly beating home favourite Antonio Panfili by 0.22 points.
