South Korean great Lee Yong-dae enjoyed the perfect farewell to his international badminton career as he won his 43rd  Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Superseries crown on home soil on the final day of the Victor Korea Open at the Seong-Nam Indoor Stadium in Seoul.

Lee and his partner Yoo Yeon Seong came out on top in the men's doubles final with a 16-21, 22-20, 21-18 win after a nervy 85-minute thriller against China’s Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen.

The 43rd title makes Lee the second most successful player at Superseries level after Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei.

Prior to the start of the day's play, total South Korean dominance was a possibility as they had realistic chances of winning all five competitions.

Ko Sung Hyun and Kim Ha Na had earlier given South Korea an ideal start, beating China’s Zheng Siwei and Chen Qingchen 21-14, 21-19 in the mixed doubles final, and with Lee and Yoo successfully navigating their way through the men’s doubles, a clean sweep from the host nation appeared likely.

"Today was such a difficult match and it was really great to play in front of so many fans," said Lee.

"We were under pressure in the opening game but we were able to work it out and going into the third game, we had the confidence that we would be able to win it.

"This is my last match in international badminton and I am so happy to have won."

South Korea’s bid for dominance on finals day was, however, thwarted in both of the two singles competitions.

Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi won her first Superseries title in three years as she beat Sung Ji-hyun in the women’s singles final.

China’s Qiao Bin, meanwhile, won the first crown at this level of his career, overcoming Son Wan Ho in the men’s singles.

Number seven seed Yamaguchi came from a game down to beat Sung 20-22, 21-15, 21-18.

Unseeded Qiao upset sixth seed Son 21-11, 21-23, 21-7.

In the women's doubles, Olympic bronze medallists Jung Kyung Eun and Shin Seung Chan of South Korea repeated their Rio 2016 display over China’s Luo Ying and Luo Yu, comfortably beating their opponents 21-13 21-11.
