More than 200 Olympians and Paralympians from Rio 2016 have participated in Los Angeles 2024’s seventh athlete town hall meeting, to give their feedback on their Games plan.

The athletes came to the meeting in Washington D.C shortly after attending the White House Team USA celebration with President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and vice-president Joe Biden.

Athletes discussed their experiences of this year’s Olympics and Paralympics at the meeting with Los Angeles 2024, who were represented by their vice chair and director of athlete relations, Janet Evans, chief strategy officer Angela Ruggiero and Anita DeFrantz, the senior advisor for legacy.

Athletes' Commission member Carl Lewis was also present, while a series of Olympic and Paralympic medalists including Haley Anderson, Tamika Catchings, Lex Gillette, Katie Holloway, Simone Manuel and Alana Nichols were among those to offer feedback.

"On behalf of Los Angeles 2024, I would like to thank all of the Rio 2016 Olympians and Paralympians for their insightful contributions to our athlete-centric, personalised Games plan," said Evans.

“As a team, Los Angeles 2024 learned a lot in Rio - from what it means to provide an excellent in-stadium and on-screen fan experience to the power of hosting the Games against a spectacular city backdrop.

"However, as much as we learned as a Bid Committee, it is the athletes who have the best window into what it will take for Los Angeles 2024 to build on the Rio athlete experience, and move towards creating the most personalised Games experience in history."

The event was held among three days of festivities to celebrate the success of the American teams at the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The United States topped the Olympic medals table by securing 121 medals, 46 golds, 37 silvers and 38 bronze.

Their Paralympic team ended fourth overall after winning 40 golds, 44 silver and 31 bronze medals.

It represented their best medal haul since Atlanta 1996, when they secured 158 medals at the Paralympics.

"Having now been to multiple LA 2024 Athlete Town Hall meetings around the country, it never ceases to amaze me just how much Olympians and Paralympians care about improving the athlete experience for the next generation," said Ruggiero, who is the International Olympic Committee’s Athletes’ Commission chair, following the meeting.

"They understand better than anyone what an impact simple tweaks and fixes to the athlete experience can have on an athlete's performance come competition day.

"I always leave these Athlete Town Hall meetings thoroughly impressed with the creativity and ingenuity that our athletes bring to the table, and energised to go back and see how we can work them into our athlete-centric, innovative Games plan."

The meeting in Washington D.C comes after similar sessions took place in Atlanta, Chicago, Eugene, Fort Lauderdale, Omaha and San Jose, with more than 450 Olympians and Paralympians involved to date.

Los Angeles is bidding against Budapest and Paris for the rights to host the Games in eight years time - with Rome technically still in the race but nearly certain to drop out after the city's Mayor Virginia Raggi withdrew her support.

The IOC are due to elect a host city in Peruvian capital Lima on September 13 next year.
