American Brady Ellison will be looking for more glory with the bow at the World Archery Field Championships in Ireland, which will begin tomorrow with the Opening Ceremony.

The US archer claimed his fourth Archery World Cup final gold medal in Odense in Denmark yesterday, beating Sjef van den Berg of The Netherlands in the gold medal match in the men's recurve competition.

Ellison, a triple Olympic medallist, will now focus on field archery, a variant of the sport which features a multi-target course on various types of terrain, including fields, woods and forests.

The event is taking place at the Killruddery House and Gardens in Bray, just to the south of Irish capital Dublin, with elite men's and women's competitions planned in recurve, compound and barebow archery.

Junior competitions using all three bows will also be held, as well as team competitions, with Ellison a contender in the men's recurve.

Field archery, which is part of the World Games programme, includes up and down shooting and cross-slopes, with unmarked distance targets and challenges of light, dark and shadow also needing to be negotiated.

To be successful, archers need to acquire skills known as "fieldcraft".

Archers usually shoot at black and yellow coloured target faces, set at distances of up to 60 metres.

The targets have six concentric rings, four black and two gold.

The inner gold ring scores six points, outer gold ring five points and black rings four to one point.

Competition in Bray will begin with archers shooting at 48 targets across two days of qualification, beginning on Wednesday (September 28).

The event will conclude on October 2.
