The Badminton World Federation (BWF) Japan Super Series began in Tokyo today with a host of qualification matches which saw competitors aiming to make it into tomorrow’s first round.

Matches took place in the men’s and women’s singles categories as well as the men’s doubles and mixed doubles.

In the men’s singles there was double Chinese delight as both Yuqi Shi and Xue Song made it through to tomorrow’s first round by beating Japanese opponents.

Shi breezed past Hashiru Shimono 21-10, 21-12, whilst Xue narrowly squeezed past Kanta Tsuneyama, 21-17, 21-19.

Also in the men’s competition, India’s Parupalli Kashyap progressed after his opponent, David Obernoster, was forced to retire.

Kashyap led 11-3 in the first before the Austrian withdrew from the contest.

There was a lot of home nation success in the women’s singles qualifiers as no less than seven players progressed.

Natsuki Nidaira performed most impressively as she swept aside American Maya Chen, 21-5, 21-7.

Japanese success proved thin in the men’s doubles, however, as two pairs were eliminated by fellow Asian opponents.

Tomoya Takashina and Kazuya Itani were beaten by China’s Liu Cheng and his partner Zheng Siwei, 21-16, 21-16.

There was further Japanese misery as South Korean duo Chung Eui Seok and Duk Young Kim saw off Yunosuke Kubota and Mahiro Kaneko in straight sets, 21-18, 21-17.

In the mixed doubles event there were four all Japanese affairs.

In the first, Naoki Yamazawa and Sayaka Hobara beat compatriots Hikaru Komachiya and Kaede Kameda 21-14, 21-16, whilst there was a three set thriller as Kohei Gondo and Sayaka Hirota lost to Yoshinori Takeuchi and his partner Yukiko Takahata 14-21, 22-20, 21-16.

The action is set to continue at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium in the 2020 Olympic host city tomorrow, when the first round will be played.

Men’s singles number one seed Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, a triple Olympic silver medallist, begins his campaign against unseeded Thai player, Boonsak Ponsana.
