European Championships silver medallist Alisa Buchinger of Austria justified her status as the favourite in the women’s under 68 kilograms kumite category as she claimed gold on the final day of the Karate1 Premier League event at the Gymnasium Paulo Sarasate in Fortaleza.

The Austrian, who lost her European crown in Montpellier earlier this year, was one of the star names taking part in the Brazilian city but she managed to cope with the pressure, beating home karateka Leticia Brito in the final.

Buchinger’s team-mate Natalia Spigolon was the recipient of the only bronze medal on offer.

The host country were the dominant force during the opening day of competition and they sealed another three gold medals to end the competition in Fortaleza, the eighth stop on the World Karate Federation (WKF) sanctioned calendar, on a high.

In a clash of the two fierce South American rival countries, Adam Ramos delighted the partisan support by defeating Argentina’s Miguel Amargos in the final of the under 84kg kumite weight division.

Julio Cezar da Silva, also of Brazil, added to the host’s medal haul by earning a bronze medal, with the other in the category going to Chile’s Randal Von Marttens.

Brazil were guaranteed gold in the women’s over 86kg kumite competition as Isabela Rodrigues took on Morgana Ferreira in the final.

Rodrigues, Pan American champion in 2014, managed to get the better of her team-mate to ensure she sealed the title.

They eventually claimed a podium sweep thanks to Evelyn Vieira and Aline Martins both sealing bronze medals.

Their final triumph on day two came in the men’s team kata discipline - though they were the only nation competing - as they took home gold and silver medals.

Chile, who sent a large squad to the tournament, tasted their first gold medal success when Rodrigo Rojas prevailed in the heaviest category of the competition – the men’s over 84kg kumite.

The Chilean competitor outlasted Argentina’s Franco Recouso to secure the crown, with bronze going to Paulo Victor Silva of Brazil and his compatriot Ramon Fernandes.

The Brazilians finished comfortably at the summit of the medal standings having won nine of the 13 categories staged at the event.
