Eldib was successful in the men's under 97 kilogram competition whilst Mahmoud was victorious in the women's under 86kg event.

The former managed to successfully lift a Paralympic record weight of 237kg in his third and final attempt to snatch victory.

He then attempted to beat his own world record, set in February of this year, with a lift of 244kg in the fourth round but failed.

The silver medal was won by Qi Dong of China.

The Beijing 2008 gold medallist and London 2012 silver medallist had to settle for second again after failing to lift above his best attempt of 233kg.

Mexico's Jose de Jesus Castillo Castillo claimed the bronze medal as he finished in third with a lift of 229kg.

Mahmoud won Egypt's second medal of the day after she also lifted a Paralympic record of 130kg.

The silver medal was won by Tharwah Alhajaj of Jordan with a successful attempt of 119kg whilst Catalina Diaz Vilchis secured Mexico's second medal of the day, winning bronze with a lift of 117kg.

"It's a big happiness to see the Egyptian flag on the higher place, because it's very hard to win a gold," said Mahmoud.

"This is for all the people who helped me and have prayed for me, such as my coaches and family.

"When I completed my first attempt of 125kg it was almost likely I would get the gold.

"I definitely want to be in Tokyo for the 2020 Paralympic Games."

In the third powerlifting contest of the day, Mohammed Khalaf of the United Arab Emirates won the men's under 88kg competition.

Khalaf won by a comfortable margin, successfully lifting 220kg, which was 10kg more than his nearest competitor.

The 47-year-old won his first Paralympic gold medal in Athens in 2004 in the under-82.5kg and added his third medal in total today following a silver at Beijing 20008.

Brazil's Evanio Da Silva won the silver medal with a best attempt of 210kg whilst the bronze medallist, Sodnompiljee Enkhbayar of Mongolia, came third after lifting the same as Da Silva.

The Brazilian finished above the Mongolian, however, due to his lower body weight.

"I cannot express my feelings for winning another gold," said Khalaf.

"I had an ambition to continue competing again and again, and now my ambition has become more than before.

"It's not about the age but the experience which makes the difference.

"Whenever I compete I can engage with younger people so they can gain the experience from me."
