New Zealand’s Sophie Pascoe claimed the eighth Paralympic title of her career after winning the women’s 200 metres individual medley SM10 final in a world record time at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium.

The 23-year-old clocked a time of 2 min 24.90sec to better the 2:25.65 she set on her way to victory in the London 2012 final.

Canada’s Aurelie Rivard took silver in an Americas record time of 2:30.03, while Hungary’s Bianca Pap was third in 2:31.46 after strong swims in the breaststroke and freestyle laps.

"I have grown in the four years since London and to come out here and take on another challenge of doing five races in a row is tough in itself and today the 200m IM (individual medley) is the toughest of them all," said Pascoe, who won gold in the women's 100m backstroke S10 yesterday.

"We set a plan and at the moment it is tracking pretty well.

"Tonight I just wanted to go out and break my own world record."

On another busy evening of swimming action, Uzbekistan stormed to the first Paralympic gold medals in their country’s history with two titles.

Fotimakhon Amilova, 17, set a world record en route to winning the women’s 100m breaststroke SB13, lowering the former mark of Great Britain’s Rebecca Redfern by 3.51 seconds with a time of 1:12.45.

Redfern also dipped under the previous world best of 1:15.96 to take silver in 1:13.81, while the United States' Colleen Young was third in 1:17.02.

Uzbekistan’s second gold medal came courtesy of a dramatic tie between Firdavsbek Musabekov and Paralympic champion Oleksii Fedyna of Ukraine in the men’s 100m breaststroke SB13.

Fedyna led on the turn, but Musabekov had a better second 50m to allow him to close the small gap.

Their tied time of 1:04.94 was an Asian record for the 19-year-old Musabekov on his Paralympic debut.

Belarusian Ihar Boki was pushed into bronze in 1:06.71 as his attempt to secure a third gold of Rio 2016 fell short.

Asian Para Games champion Tang Wai Lok won Hong Kong’s first-ever Paralympic swimming gold medal with victory in the men’s 200m freestyle S14.

Tang set a Paralympic and Asian record of 1:56.32 to edge Britain’s Thomas Hamer, who worked his way up from sixth after the first 50m to finish in 1:56.58, and Australia’s Daniel Fox, the bronze medallist in 1:56.69.

There was also a world record in the men’s 200m individual medley SM10 as world champion Denis Dubrov of Ukraine triumphed in 2:06.87.

Compatriots Maksym Krypak and Dmytro Vanzenko were second and third respectively.
