Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, has been announced as a keynote speaker for the inaugural Commonwealth Sports Summit which will take place in Edmonton next month.

The Commonwealth Games Federation’s (CGF) vice-patron will take part in the Conference on October 6, which is being held as part of the CGF’s three-day General Assembly.

"The newly-launched Commonwealth Sports Summit will be an inspiring and engaging conversation with sports leaders from across Canada and the broader Commonwealth as we bring Transformation 2022 to life," said Louise Martin, CGF President.

"I am so grateful to our vice-patron, HRH Prince Edward, and the many other esteemed speakers and contributors who will challenge, support and shape our thinking as we nurture and develop the Commonwealth Sport Movement now and into the future."

The Conference, taking place under the theme “It’s Within Us”, has a programme of keynote speakers, contributors, workshops and panel discussions.

Focus will be placed upon governance, organisational culture, integrity, gender equity, human rights and sport for development and peace.

The summit is aimed at helping to deliver the CGF’s vision to connect, engage and inspire the Commonwealth and beyond, which is hoped will build peaceful, sustainable and prosperous communities through sport.

Chairman of Gold Coast 2018, Peter Beattie, will be among the keynote speakers at the Conference, as well as David Rutherford, chief commissioner of the New Zealand Human Rights Commission.

Jude Kelly, the artistic director of the Southbank Centre London and founder of the Women of the World Festival, and Trinidad and Tobago Commonwealth Games Association President Brian Lewis will also be keynote speakers.

"Canada has a history of firsts in Commonwealth Sport including hosting the first Commonwealth Games in Hamilton in 1930 and showcasing Para-sports at a Games for the very first time, when they were an exhibition event in 1994,” said Richard Powers, Commonwealth Games Canada President.

"Continuing this tradition we are delighted to host the first Commonwealth Sport Summit."

Baroness Patricia Scotland, the newly-elected secretary-general of the Commonwealth Secretariat, and Canada’s Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities Carla Qualtrough, will be among contributors to the event.

The Summit will take place as the Chateau Lacombe Hotel in Edmonton and will be hosted by the multi-award winning Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s sports anchor Scott Russell.

Edmonton had launched a bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, eventually awarded to South African city Durban, but withdrew from contention due to falling oil prices.
