Turkey ended their home leg of the World Karate Federation (WKF) Karate1 Premier League series in commanding fashion by winning five of the six gold medals on offer on the final day of the event in Istanbul.

Busra Seyda Turan set the tone for another superb outing for Turkish karatekas as Busra Seyda Turan harnessed the energy of the crowd to claim a shock win over European champion Elena Quirci of Switzerland in the final of the women’s under 68 kilograms kumite division.

Vassiliki Panetsidou of Greece and Montenegro’s Marina Rakovic took home the two available bronze medals.

The hosts weren’t far away from a podium sweep in the women’s team kata competition as they clinched gold and two bronze, with Montenegro denying them the full set by earning silver following defeat to Turkey in the final.

The men’s events were totally dominated by the home nation as they topped the podium in the under 84kg kumite, over 84kg kumite and team kata competitions.

Rising star Ugur Aktas, who won the under-21 title at the World Championships in Indonesia in 2015 before securing gold at the European Championships in Montpellier earlier this year, saw off the challenge of Turgut Hasanov of Azerbaijan to reign supreme in the under 84kg weight class.

Hasanov’s compatriot Aykhan Mamayev finished with bronze, as did Petar Spasenovski of Macedonia.

Reigning world champion Enes Erkan, one of the leading names in the sport, picked up his first Karate1 Premier League gold medal since the opening event of the season in Paris in January by overpowering Orkhan Heydali of Azerbaijan in the over 84kg final.

The Turkish star came into the event on home soil with huge pressure on his shoulders but he dealt with it admirably to ensure he didn’t disappoint the partisan crowd.

Asiman Gurbanli added to the Azeri haul with bronze, with the other in the category going to his team-mate Ali Jafarov.

The fifth and final Turkish gold of the second day came in the men’s team kata, where only Saudi Arabia’s bronze prevented them from monopolising the podium.

The hosts came close to wrapping up all six titles but Croatia’s Masa Vidic proved too strong for Meltem Hocaoglu to deny the Turkish athlete a second consecutive victory at the Karate1 Premier League tournament in Istanbul.

Romanian Alexandrina Mirea and Farida Aliyeva of Azerbaijan did enough to claim a bronze medal apiece.

Turkey ended the event comfortably at the summit of the medals table with a haul of 25 - comprised of nine golds, five silvers and 11 bronze.

The WKF Karate1 Premier League series resumes in Fortaleza in Brazil from September 17 to 18.
