Waterloo in Ontario will play host to the World Flying Disc Federation's (WFDF) World Junior Ultimate Championships in 2018, it has been announced.

Action is set to take place across both RIM and Kiwanis Parks in the Canadian city from August 19 to 25.

Billed as the WFDF's flagship event for male and female under-20 players, the biennial tournament will seek to emulate the success of last month's edition in Wrocław in Poland.

There, a record 49 teams and over 1,000 athletes spanning 29 countries participated.

Waterloo is an experienced host for flying disc events and home to the third largest Ultimate league in Ontario, with 850 active members and an established youth league.

"The Tournament Organising Committee (TOC) will be comprised of many returning staff from past Canadian National events, bringing both experience and the skills to successfully host WJUC 2018," said WFDF President Robert Rauch.

"We expect they will be able to put on a world class event that will properly showcase the talent and skill of our next generation of global competitors."

It comes at a time of growth after the sport was officially recognised by the International Olympic Committee last year.

Canada will start as defending champions in the women's event after winning in Wrocław, while they were beaten by United States in the final of the men's competition.

Andrew Portwine, who sits on the Ultimate Canada and the Ontario Ultimate Boards of Directors, has already been named as event director and head of the TOC.

The official has previously acted acted as tournament director for the Canadian University Ultimate Championships in 2011 and the Canadian Ultimate National Championships, which hosted 86 teams in 2014.

"The City and Region of Waterloo are ready, willing, and able to host the 2018 World Junior Ultimate Championships," he added.

"This will be a continuation from our successful hosting of prior National Ultimate events.

"We look forward to being able to showcase our beautiful city and the wonderful talents of global youth ultimate.

"The local Organising Committee and the greater Waterloo community is looking forward to welcoming the world with open arms.

"It will be our pleasure to host ultimate players, coaches and their families from the world over while putting on a truly world class event for all to enjoy."
