A new multi-discipline event has been announced by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) after acrobatic gymnastics was added to the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games programme.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved the addition of acrobatic gymnastics to the programme at their Session in Rio de Janeiro earlier this month.

The FIG have now stated that around 160 gymnasts from all continents will take part in their event, split into 10 or 11 groups.

Each of the groups will contain between 14 to 16 gymnasts, who will compete as a multi-national and multi-discipline teams.

The vast majority of the groups will be made up of around six to eight artistic gymnasts, split between male and female athletes.

Two trampoline gymnasts, one male and one female, will then join three acrobatic gymnasts in the group.

The groups will be completed by three rhythmic gymnasts.

The FIG have stated that the multi-discipline event will serve as qualification for the artistic gymnastics all-around, individual apparatus and rhythmic gymnastics individual all-around finals.

Athletes will also be able to qualify for the trampoline and acrobatic gymnastics finals through the event.

The IOC have not yet decided on the quota for the event, with the FIG stating they will update and approve the rules once the number is decided.

The third edition of the Youth Olympic Games will take place from October 1 to 12 in Argentina's capital.
