China’s Olympic medallists have attended a variety show in Hong Kong to allow the public to celebrate their achievements at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The show took place in Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Wan Chai, with each of the medallists taking part in a series of activities.

According to the South China Morning Post, the country’s first gold medallist at Rio 2016, shooter Zhang Mengxue, displayed her skills by firing her air gun at balloons while balancing on an exercise machine.

Five weightlifters were also involved in a tug-of-war with around 50 children.

Around 45 medallists from the Games took part in the show.

China finished Rio 2016 with a haul of 70 medals, including 26 gold, 18 silver and 26 bronze.

At their home Games in Beijing in 2008, China won a national best 100 medals to finish top of the overall medal table.

They finished second to the United States at London 2012, ending with a tally of 88 medals.

Their total of 70 proved only enough for third at Rio, with the US and Britain ending ahead of the Chinese team in the final medal table, having won 46 and 27 gold medals respectively.

The show was designed to allow fans to pay tribute to the athletes, with a reported 3,000 people filling the venue in Hong Kong, a former British territory that was handed back to China as a Special Administrative Region of the country in 1997.

Previous editions of the welcome home event have taken place at the 40,000 seater Hong Kong Stadium.

The athletes also visited a home for the elderly and met with teenagers.

They will now visit Macau for another event related to the Olympics.
