Poland’s Eugenia Bujak earned a narrow sprint victory at the close of the GP de Plouay-Bretagne, the penultimate race of the International Cycling Union (UCI) Women’s WorldTour season which saw Megan Guarnier clinch the overall crown.

The race consisted of four laps of a 27 kilometre circuit with three climbs, which then concluded with a shortened final lap of 14km.

Canada’s Leah Kirchmann ignited the closing stages of the race by launching an attack at the start of the final lap.

Her solo move lasted for nearly 10km, but she was eventually reeled in by a chasing group, which included three-time world road race champion Marianne Vos.

The Dutchwoman would not claim the win in a sprint finish as she was distanced on the final climb of the day.

Bujak had briefly dropped off the front group on the ascent, but fought back and claimed the victory with a powerful sprint, crossing in 3hr, 12min and 31sec.

Italy’s Elena Cecchini and Canada’s Joelle Numainville were forced to settle for second and third respectively, with the duo ending on the same time as the winner.

American Guarnier crossed the line in fifth place, but the Boels-Dolmans rider was able to celebrate becoming the first winner of the UCI Women’s WorldTour as she can no longer be overtaken in the standings.

The race was also an important one for her team-mate Evelyn Stevens, with the American triple world champion bringing her career to a close at its conclusion.
