The Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) have awarded a top accolade to American Mike Elefante, for his work spreading the sport in China.

Elefante received the 2016 International Lacrosse Development Committee Award after tireless efforts to grow the game in a country where it did not enjoy much of a foothold.

His work culminated this month with the China Lacrosse Association (CLA) receiving full membership status from the FIL.

Elefante was China's men's head coach between 2009 and 2015 while he served on the board of directors between 2011 and this year.

He has also ran youth programmes and was responsible for fundraising and equipment drives.

He helped establish lacrosse organisations in various cities, including Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xinjiang and Nanjing.

“I’m honoured to be receiving this award," said Elefante.

"I consider myself incredibly lucky to have been in a position to help the development of lacrosse in China.

“One of the best things about lacrosse is the universal feeling that, in some way, we have to give back to the sport.

“I know anyone would have done what I did, and many would have done much more.”

Tom Hayes, the FIL's director of development, praised Elefante's contribution.

"The challenge of building a programme in a country that large and complex both socially and politically is huge - and Mike made it happen.

"We’re happy he’s getting the recognition he deserves.”

China Lacrosse made their first World Championship appearance only two years ago at the 2014 FIL Men’s Lacrosse World Championships in Denver.

They defeated Uganda, another World Championship newcomer, 14-7 to finish in 33rd place out of 38 teams.
