Australian taekwondo player Safwan Khalil has announced his retirement from the sport following his Rio 2016 campaign.

The 30-year-old, who was born in Tripoli in Lebanon, lost in the quarter-finals of the Olympics to Thailand’s Tawin Hanprab, who triumphed 11-9.

The Australian then lost his repechage bout to South Korea’s number two seed Kim Tae-hun, who came out on top 4-1.

That meant Khalil did not progress to the bronze medal bouts.

He did reach that stage at London 2012 but lost to Aleksey Denisenko of Russia and just missed out on a medal.

Now, he has decided not to battle on until Tokyo 2020 in four years time, instead deciding to focus on life with his fiancé Carmen Marton, another Australian Olympic taekwondo player.

“I’m done, I’m 30-years-old and I want to start a family,” he said.

“After London and getting so close we decided we wanted to go around again especially considering we were still winning medals on the world stage.

“This time around Carmen and I spoke before this campaign and said no matter what happens we have to be happy with what we have done and just move on.

“This is now the end of a very long era.

“I am going to eat for about a week straight as I’ve been dieting for this weight division for the past ten years.

“I want woodfire pizza and Carmen will order a nice mushroom pasta which I’ll eat most of as well and then a nice cheesecake.

“Then we will go to the shops on the way home and buy all the munchies and watch TV until we fall asleep in a food coma.”
