France's show jumpers have won the Olympic gold medal in the equestrian team event today at the National Equestrian Center in Deodoro Park in Rio de Janeiro.

The French team made up of Philippe Rozier, Kevin Staut, Roger Yves Bost and Penelope Leprevost gave France their second equestrian title at Rio 2016 after also celebrating team success in eventing.

France came from behind to win the show jumping competition after the four teams that had started the day in a tie for the lead withdrew riders or knocked rails down.

Germany, Brazil, The Netherlands and the United States were level going into the final round of the team competition, while France started the day with two time faults from the previous round of jumping.

France produced a series of stunning performances, however, scoring just three team penalties throughout the competition to finish in first place.

The one and only previous time that France was victorious in this event was 40 years ago at Montreal 1976.

The US were second on five points, while Canada just missed the podium, losing to Germany in a jump off for bronze after both teams finished joint third with eight faults each.

In the nervy decider, Yann Candele was Canada's lead rider aboard First Choice 15 and posted four faults but German Christian Ahlmann, the world number one, was clean aboard Taloubet Z.

Tiffany Foster and Tripple X III rode a clear second round but that was matched by Germany's Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and Fibonacci.

Amy Miller and Heros had a fault in the third round, setting the stage for Germany's Daniel Deusser to end the competition with a clear run around the course, securing his nation the bronze medal.
