The National Olympic Committee of El Salvador (ESNOC) has awarded diplomas to 36 physical education teachers following a course organised by the Salvadorian Olympic Academy and the Foundation for Educational Development (FEPADE).

The diploma, based on the Olympic values, physical education and sport, is part of FEPADE’s "Adopt a school" project, conducted in coordination with the Academy and with special assistance from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Through these kinds of activities, the Academy and FEPADE are aiming to ensure that children and young people have access to different sports.

El Salvador took an eight-athlete delegation to the ongoing Rio 2016 Olympic Games, competing across six sports.

Among them is judoka Juan Diego Turcios, who beat Greece’s Roman Moustopoulos in the round of 32 of the men’s under 81 kilograms competition before losing against Georgia’s Avtandil Tchrikishvili.

Julio Cesar Salamanca Pineda contested the men’s under 62kg weightlifting competition but finished in tenth place.

It is El Salvador's 11th appearance at the Summer Olympics, having first competed in 1968.

However, they are still waiting for their first medal of any colour.
