South Korea extended their remarkable winning streak in the women’s team archery event to eight straight Olympic Games after defeating Russian in the Rio 2016 gold medal match at the Sambódromo.

Since the event was introduced back at Seoul 1988, the South Korean team have yet to lose a match.

Their three strong team of Chang Hye Jin, Choi Misun and Ki Bo Bae thrived, rather than wilted, under the pressure to trying to maintain the country’s 100 per cent record.

The trio recorded 5-1 victories over Japan and Chinese Taipei to advance through to the gold medal contest.

Russia’s Ksenia Perova, Inna Stepanova and Tuiana Dashidorzhieva aimed to defeat the favourites after they overcame Italy 5-3 in their semi-final tie, having begun the day with a narrow 5-4 triumph against India.

However, they proved no match for the South Koreans, who stormed to a 5-1 victory and with it the gold medal.

“I’m happy that I got my third medal and I’m very thankful for my teammates,” said, Ki, who will now seek to defend the individual title she claimed at London 2012.

“This medal was won not just by the team but by everyone who supported us.

“That is why I cried.

“When it’s time for me to sleep, I always think about archery.

“That is why I can stay on top.”

Chinese Taipei were able to win a tightly fought bronze medal match, emerging as 5-3 winners against the Italian team.

The men’s and women’s individual competitions are due to begin tomorrow, with the finals scheduled for Thursday (August 11) and Friday (August 12) respectively.
