Star gymnast Simone Biles and swimmer Michael Phelps have been awarded the best female and male athlete of the month prizes for July respectively by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC).

The women’s wheelchair basketball side was given the team prize.

Biles, who is the strong favourite for the all-around gold medal at the upcoming Olympic Games, was also named as best female for June.

The 20-year-old enjoyed another successful month as she maintained her record of winning every all-around competition she has entered since 2013 at the United States Olympic Trials in San Jose with a total of 123.250 points.

She finished over two points ahead of nearest challenger Laurie Hernandez to secure her spot on the American gymnastics team for Rio 2016.

The 10-time World Championships gold medallist also earned the top score in the vault with 32.200 and the floor exercise, where her routine was rewarded with 31.250.

Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time with 18 gold medals, claimed the best male award for his performances during the US Olympic swimming trials in Omaha.

The 31-year-old became the first American male swimmer to qualify for a fifth Olympic Games with three wins at the event as he took victory in the 200 metres butterfly and 200m individual medley, where he edged arch rival Ryan Lochte.

Phelps also won the 100m butterfly race and has a record 16 career victories at Olympic trials.

The American women’s wheelchair basketball team were also in good form this month as they clinched the Women’s World Super Cup title in Frankfurt in Germany.

They overcame reigning Paralympic champions and host nation Germany, as well as London 2012 bronze medallists The Netherlands, on their way to the top of the podium, providing a boost to their chances of success at Rio 2016.

Each National Governing Body can nominate one female, one male and one team per discipline.

An internal nominating committee selects five contenders from both the male and female categories, and three from the team category to advance to the voting round.

Sporting representatives and members of the media account for 50 per cent of the final tally, with fan voting determining the other half.
