A bipartisan resolution introduced to back the Los Angeles bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics has been passed by both the United States Senate and House of Representatives.

The resolution, which was first announced in April, expresses the "sincere hope" that the Californian city will be selected as the 2024 host by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

It is backed by both major political parties with Congressmen Xavier Becerra and Stephen Knight, from the Democrats and Republicans respectively, introducing the resolution.

"The Congress of the United States expresses the sincere hope that the United States will be selected as the site for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and pledges its cooperation and support toward their successful fulfillment in the highest sense of the Olympic tradition," the resolution says.

"Los Angeles knows what it takes to host the Olympics," said Becerra.

"A dynamic economy, a growing transit system, and ready-made venues - Los Angeles has that and so much more.

"We have proven we can do this and do it successfully.

"I’m proud to have introduced along with several of my colleagues this resolution to say that America will do all it can so that Los Angeles and our country continue a proud Olympic tradition."

Los Angeles is competing against Budapest, Paris and Rome and has already hosted the Olympic Games twice - in 1932 and 1984.

"Los Angeles is an example of the extraordinary legacy an Olympic and Paralympic Games can leave behind in a city," said Knight.

"As a long-time resident of the Greater Los Angeles area, I am thrilled to support a region that showcases the Olympic legacy in action every day, and that is uniquely suited to build on that legacy should Los Angeles be named host city in 2024."

The Los Angeles bid has already received the support of outgoing President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, as well as a unanimous show of support from the city's council.

A bill of support was also introduced in the California legislature, while the bid is said to boast 88 per cent public backing among Los Angeles residents.

LA 2024 chairman Casey Wasserman said: “From Hollywood to Silicon Valley, Los Angeles and California are constantly at the cutting edge of imagining ‘what’s next.’

"LA 2024 is positioned to harness California’s leadership and put American technology and innovation to work in order to deliver an Olympic and Paralympic Games that connects with and inspires the next generation.

" We are proud to receive congressional support as we work to reignite America’s passion for the Games.”

The IOC will elect its host for 2024 next year in Peruvian capital Lima.
