Janja Garnbret of Slovenia continued her impressive run of form as she clinched her second consecutive International Sport Climbing Federation (IFSC) World Cup gold medal in Villars in Switzerland.

Garnbret came into the women’s lead discipline event having topped the podium at the last World Cup stop in Chamonix last week and proved too strong once again.

The Slovenian stunned the crowd with her agility towards the end of the final as she took home the title ahead of the same two climbers she beat in Chamonix.

Belgium’s Anak Verhoeven was forced to settle for silver for the second event in a row, while Kim Jain of South Korea secured another bronze medal for South Korea.

Austrians Jessica Pilz and Magdalena Röck fell agonisingly short of a place in the top three as they finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Garnbret’s compatriot Domen Skofic was hoping to replicate his winning performance in Chamonix but he was unable to qualify for the final in the men’s lead discipline, leaving the door open for a different athlete to secure gold.

Sean McColl of Canada duly obliged, claiming victory by virtue of being the only climber to reach the top panel in the final.

There was a completely different set of podium finishers compared to the previous competition as Frenchman Thomas Joannes bagged silver ahead of Keiichiro Korenaga of Japan.

The next IFSC World Cup is scheduled to take place from July 22 to 23 in Briançon in France.
