International Ski Federation (FIS) officials have visited Mönchengladbach ahead of the city's debut as a freestyle World Cup host this year.

The German city is due to stage big air events in freestyle skiing and snowboarding on December 2 and 3.

Joseph Fitzgerald, the FIS freestyle skiing coordinator, travelled to inspect progress with FIS snowboard assistant race director Roberto Moresi.

More than 130 athletes from 20 countries are expected in Germany, and will grace a record 49 metre high structure.

Snowboarding big air will make its Olympic debut in Pyeongchang in 2018.

“The competitions will be staged on the highest scaffolding ramp we have ever seen," said Moresi.

Two live acts - Sportfreunde Stiller and Beginner-DJs - will help create an "exciting festival event", organisers hope, while there will also be a large product promotion area.

“We certainly have enthusiastic and knowledgeable organisers, a special location, and an exciting programme with great side events," said Fitzgerald.

"Combining all this with the spectacular big air competition will create a fantastic event."

Competition will be held at SparkassenPark, while the Jever Fun Skihalle Neuss snowhall will produce the ramp, which is due to be constructed in November, and deliver the snow.

Big air competitions see competitors slide down a ramp and perform tricks at great heights.
