The Chilean Olympic Committee (COCH) has officially inaugurated its "travelling museum" which is currently touring the South American country.

Housed in an inflatable dome, the museum plays host to an exhibition of Chilean Olympic and sporting treasures.

It means that the Olympic movement and lessons of Olympism can be taken on the road, with 45 people able to view the exhibition at once.

Among the items on display are the shoes worn by tennis player Nicolás Massú when he won the doubles gold medal with Fernando González at the Athens 2004 Olympics - adding to the singles title he had already claimed.

Massú's titles remain as the only Olympic gold medals Chile has won in its history.

Also displayed is a tennis racket used by Marcelo Rios, who topped the world rankings in 1998, and the javelin used by Marlene Ahrens on her way to silver at the Melbourne 1956 Games.

A 3D animated film is also part of the museum to explain the history of the Olympic Games, from the first ancient editions to more modern times.

The idea was dreamt up by Chilean Olympic Academy President Jaime Agliati.

He was awarded the 2016 International Olympic Committee Sport and Innovation Trophy for his initiative, which could be replicated in other countries.

The museum will finish touring Chile in August.
