World Championship bronze medallist Tre Whyte will lead the British team at the European Cycling Union (UEC) BMX European Championships which begin tomorrow in Verona.

The 22-year-old, who was third at the Worlds in Rotterdam in 2014, has been named alongside Quillan Isidore in the British elite men's line-up.

“I’m pleased Tre is on the team," said British BMX coach Grant White.

"As well as putting in a good performance on race day I’ll be looking to him to set a professional example to the junior riders who will be able to learn from his preparations and approach on race day in order to aid their own development.”

A number of big names will be absent at the event in Italy in the Olympic year.

France's world champion Joris Daudet, who won his title in Medellin in Colombia in May, is among those to sit out of the action in Italy with Rio 2016 looming next month.

Dutch rider Niek Kimman, winner of the time trial world title in Medellin and was who second behind Daudet in the elite men's race, will also be missing along with the back-to-back Olympic champion, Latvia's Maris Strombergs.

Strombergs, the champion from Beijing 2008 and London 2012, won a bronze medal in the time trial in Medellin.

Action will begin tomorrow with the men's and women's time trials before age group competitions on Saturday (July 9).

The concluding day on Sunday (July 10) will see the elite men and women's competitions, as well as the junior men and women.

Built in 2013, Verona’s Olympic Arena BMX track is the first world and Olympic standard facility for BMX racing in Italy.
