The bidding application process for the 2018 International Roller Sports Federation (FIRS) Roller Speed Skating World Championships has been opened by the governing body.

Candidates must submit bids by October 30 to be in contention to host the Championships, which feature both road and track events.

The successful bid will be revealed on December 30, with the hosts then given a deadline of June 30 to submit and organisation chart, before approving a logo the following month.

“Every year these Championships get a resounding success: anywhere in the world this event takes place , it is always expected and followed by thousands of people, not only in terms of audience present on the stands but also as audience connected to the FIRS Web TV which broadcasts exclusive all the competitions of the Championships,” said Sabatino Aracu, FIRS President.

“The streaming broadcasting of the World Championships of all our disciplines, integrated and supported by the most popular social networks has been followed by millions of people all over the world.

“Hosting a World Championship is also an opportunity for the organiser country to promote its image, its own culture and its own tourism.”

The governing body state the event will bring athletes and spectators from over 60 countries to the event, with around 4,000 people expected to reside in hotels throughout the duration of the competition, which is due to last for two weeks.

FIRS also believe that the chosen city will experience further economic benefits in the future, citing a study which claims that 30 per cent of competitors will return with their families or friends after the event to share their positive experiences of the city.

They have expressed that candidates need to achieve levels of organisational excellence and target giving participants an unforgettable experience.

The 2016 Speed Skating World Championships are set to be staged in Nanjing, China, the host city for the 2014 Youth Olympics Games.
