Russian heavyweight Olympic gold medallist Alexander Povetkin has been cleared of doping charges, his promoter has claimed.

Povetkin faced disciplinary proceedings after testing positive for the heart attack drug meldonium in a blood sample in April.

He claimed, however, to have only taken the product last year, so before it was added to the World Anti-Doping Agency banned list on January 1.

His promoter Andrey Ryabinsky has revealed that his fighter has been cleared by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

"WADA sent us today a clarification note saying athletes that tested positive with less than one microgram of meldonium in samples taken before October 1, 2016 will not be disqualified," he told Russian news agency R-Sport

"Therefore, WADA admits that Alexander Povetkin is 'clean'.

"We are awaiting now a positive decision from the World Boxing Council (WBC)."

Povetkin claimed to have passed three tests earlier in April before his failed test, according to Russian media.

It was also claimed the sample contained just 70 nanograms, or seven per cent of what the anti-doping authorities banned.

Povetkin, winner of the Olympic super-heavyweight title at Athens 2004, has won 30 of his 31 professional fights since turning professional 11 years ago.

The 36-year-old Povetkin has missed an opportunity to fight American Deontay Wilder for the WBC world title as a result of the positive test.
