Home favourite Hung Shih Han won three matches today to book her place in the main women’s singles draw at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Chinese Taipei Open Grand Prix Gold.

Having triumphed 21-17, 17-21, 21-18 against Thailand’s Chasinee Korepap, Hung went on to overcome compatriot Su Yu Chen 22-20, 21-9 and then fellow Taiwanese Chien Hui Yu 21-11, 21-13.

She now faces a meeting with number one seed Wang Shixian of China tomorrow, when she will hope to cause an upset.

Joining Hung in the main draw is compatriot Shih Jyun Jhou, who followed up a 21-18, 21-8 victory over Hong Kong’s Tsang Wing Chiu by beating Indonesia’s Susanto Yulia Yose 21-18, 21-17 and countrywoman Li Ting Peng 18-21, 23-21, 21-14.

Wen Chi Hsu, also of Chinese Taipei, came within one win of coming through qualification but suffered a 15-21, 16-21 defeat at the hands of South Korea’s Kim Na Young.

In men’s qualification, Chinese Taipei’s Chi Yu Lo set up a clash with Russia’s Vladimir Malkov by defeating Macau’s Pang Fong Pui 21-12, 21-13 and Thailand’s Noppanai Singrueang 20-22, 21-17, 21-10.

Chu Han Chou also delighted the home crowd, beating Macau’s Pui Ngai Che 21-8, 21-7 to earn a tie with 15th seed Sameer Verma of India.

Action at the event is due to conclude on Sunday (July 3).
