Doctor Anita Green has been appointed as chief medical officer of 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, was announced today.

Green steps into the role having worked within the sports medicine industry for more than 20 years.

She has vast experience with elite-level athletes and was a key medical officer at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, the last occasion the quadrennial event was held in Australia.

Green, who has also held positions with the National A League Soccer and Brisbane Marathon and Gold Coast Airport Marathon, will be tasked with overseeing the delivery of the Games-time medical response during the event, due to take place from April 4 to 15.

The chief medical officer will also be responsible for recruiting the medical team for the Games.

“Australia has some of the best trained and experienced sports medicine professionals available to provide world-class multidisciplinary care for the athletes who will compete at the Games,” Green said.

“This frontline care with be integrated with the local and regional health services to provide for the health needs of all the athletes and team officials, as well as spectators.

“It is a wonderful challenge to bring together the large team of health professions to make the 2018 Games a safe and successful event.”

Gold Coast 2018 chief executive Mark Peters believes the Green’s role is fundamental for the implementation of high-quality medical services during the Commonwealth Games.

“Dr Green will impart her extensive experience to ensure we recruit a highly credentialed medical team that meets the varied requirements of the medical function, from establishment of the multi-disciplinary Polyclinic in the Commonwealth Games Village to providing medical services to athletes at the competition venues,” he said.

“It is a pleasure to have someone with Dr Green’s considerable expertise and enthusiasm join the Gold Coast 2018 team.”
