Babikov immigrated to Toronto back in 2003 to begin racing on the Canadian ski programme, but represented Russia at the Turin 2006 Winter Olympics.

After receiving Canadian citizenship in 2007, the skier fully joined the country’s programme two years later and represented the nation both the Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

His best display came in Vancouver, where he finished fifth in the pursuit race, while Babikov narrowly missed out on a World Championship medal in 2013 after ending fourth in the 15 kilometre freestyle event at Val di Fiemme.

Babikov, however, did top the podium on the final stage of the prestigious Tour de Ski back in 2009.

“Coaching is something I have always targeted as a goal of mine when I was ready to stop competing,” Babikov said.

“It is my goal to share what I’ve learned and experienced throughout my career to help the younger athletes develop, and the top guys achieve excellence.

“I really care so much about all of the Canadian athletes - from the development to elite level - and the success of this programme.

“I hope I can play a small role in this team of highly-dedicated coaches to help all of the athletes achieve their dreams.”

Babikov is now set to work alongside Louis Bouchard, who has been a coach of the Canadian a World Cup team for the past six-years and is taking a leading role in preparing athletes for the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics.

Charles Castonguay will also offer support during the World Cup season, while he will continue coaching at the Pierre Harvey Training Centre.

“I expect the same drive and determination from him in his coaching career,” said Tom Holland, high-performance director, Cross-Country Ski de Fond Canada.

“Trust and chemistry are key ingredients to any successful team. Ivan has always been one of the most respected athletes in our program.

“He brings tremendous experience and insight on what it takes to succeed on the World Cup.

“I believe that working alongside Louis, Ivan will be an extremely valuable tool to the success of our Team well into the future.”

Chris Jeffries has been given the responsibility of acting as the Canadian women’s team coach, while Kathy Davies will act as their technique coach and Lisa Patterson will serve as the team coordinator.
