The Sanki Sliding Center, which hosted luge, bobsleigh and skeleton competitions during Sochi 2014, will play host to the World Championships for the first time.

It will be the first time that Russia have held the event, which takes place during years where a Winter Olympic Games is not being held.

Russian Luge Federation President Natalia Gart presented their successful bid, with the FIL granting the country hosting rights during the governing body’s Congress in Lake Placid.

The Sanki Sliding Center has featured on the Luge World Cup circuit for the past two seasons, following its successful staging of Olympic competition in 2014.

It was also the venue for the 2015 European Luge Championships, which saw home favourite Semen Pavlichenko earn the men’s title, while Germany’s Dajana Eitberger triumphed in the women’s event.

Next year’s Championships are scheduled to take place in Innsbruck, with the competition set to decide who will hold the world titles heading into the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

Winterberg in Germany will stage the 48th edition of the Championships in 2019, before Sochi hosts the competition the following year.

The FIL Congress also awarded the 2020 Junior World Championships to Bludenz during the Congress.

The decision to award a World Championships to Russia will raise eyebrows as an investigation continues into the allegations made by former Moscow Laboratory head Grigory Rodchenkov.

He claims that up to 15 medal winners were involved in a state sponsored doping programme in which samples were switched for clean ones during the night.

A World Anti-Doping Agency independent investigation is due to be completed by July 15.

Russian won two luge silver medals in Sochi, including for men's individual star Albert Demchenko.
