Latvians Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins pulled off a shock win against reigning world champions and number two seeds Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt of Brazil to claim the men’s International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Olsztyn Grand Slam title in Poland.

Having earlier beaten another Brazilian pairing, Saymon Barbosa and Gustavo "Guto" Carvalhaes, 18-21, 21-18, 15-12 in the semi-finals, the sixth-seeded duo went on to overcome Cerutti and Oscar Schmidt 21-19, 21-15 to take the gold medal.

Victory earned Samoilovs and Smedins their first international Grand Slam crown since topping the Moscow podium in August 2013.

It also brought an end to a two-match losing streak against their Brazilian opponents and they now trail Cerutti and Oscar Schmidt 4-3 in the overall FIVB World Tour series.

"[It was] very important for us mentally to get confidence against this team," said Samoilovs, who has now won eight FIVB World Tour gold medals together with Smedins.

"Because they are a really good team and they are one of the main teams that will go for gold in Rio [at this year's Olympic Games] for sure.

"So it was really important to beat them."

After winning six FIVB World Championship, Grand Slam and Major Series events last season, Cerutti and Oscar Schmidt have now finished fifth, second, fourth and second in their first four high-profile events on the 2015-16 FIVB World Tour calendar.

They advanced to their 12th FIVB World Tour gold medal match in 27 international starts together with a 21-16, 18-21, 18-16 win over third-seeded Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson of the United States.

In the bronze medal match, Saymon and Guto defeated Gibb and Patterson 21-15, 19-21, 15-11 to ensure their first-ever FIVB Grand Slam podium finish.
